While the entire show will feature many attractions, Sunday PUNCH highlights key things to look forward to at the 2023 Grammys Award

Venue

In line with its usual tradition, the Grammys is returning to Los Angeles this year, after a brief stint with Las Vegas last year.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, and the Omicron variant surge, the event was postponed to April from its original January date in 2022.

This year’s show is slated to hold on Sunday at Crypto.com Arena, formerly known as the Staples Center.

Hosts

While the South African comedian stepped down as host of The Daily Show last year, Trevor Noah is not leaving the screens any time soon.

Noah was snagged to host the 65th Grammy Awards after hosting the previous two editions of the award in 2021 and 2022.

Media personality, Alina Visson and Broadway actress, Amanda Kloots will be manning the red carpet.

Performances

As Noah described the event in its 2022 edition, the Grammys is “a concert where we are giving out awards.”

Like previous years, Grammys 2023 promises several performances from the industry’s biggest stars.

The organisers, Recording Academy, have confirmed performances by hip-hop legends, Jay Z, Lil Wayne, Rick Ross; singers, Stevie Wonder, John legend and many others.

Nominations

With 28 wins under her belt, Beyoncé holds the crown for the most awarded female artiste in Grammys history.

The songstress is however not relenting, she also leads with the most nominations this year. Her “Renaissance” album released July 2022, got a total of nine nods from the academy.

Rapper, Kendrick Lamar, has the second highest nomination with eight nods for his album, “Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers”.

Adele and Brandi Carlile follow with seven nominations each.

Nigerian Artistes

Nigerian music figures continue to make their mark in the global scene with several nominations at the Grammys this year.

Nigerian music star, Temilade Openiyi has been making international moves ever since her iconic collaboration with Wizkid, “Essence” penetrated American airwaves in 2021. The song also earned a nomination in the Grammy’s Best Global Performance category in 2022.

This year, the artiste continues to solidify her spot in the global space after “Wait For U”, her collaboration with Future and Drake, peaked at No 1 of the Billboard Hot 100 charts. The song was nominated in the ‘Best Melodic Rap’ and ‘Best Rap Song’ categories in the 2023 Grammys.

Openiyi’s contribution on Beyoncé’s song, “Move”, off the Renaissance album, earned her another nomination. The said project is competing for the Album of the Year award.

Burna Boy is another Nigerian star representing the country in the prestigious award. He is nominated in the ‘Best Global Music Performance’ category for his song, “Last Last”. He was also nominated in the ‘Best Global Music Album’ category for his 2022 project, “Love, Damini”.

With six total nods, the singer currently holds the title for the highest nominations for a Nigerian artiste at the Grammys.

He earlier won the Best Global Music Album in 2021 for his “Twice as Tall” album.

Another Nigerian artiste that got a Grammy nod this year is American-based rapper, singer and actor, Tobe Nwigwe. He was nominated in the ‘Best New Artiste’ category.

Ambrose Akinmusire was also nominated in the ‘Best Improvised Jazz Solo’ category for his work, “Rounds (Live)”
