The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced the final deadline for Nigerians to complete the linkage of their Subscriber Identification Modules (SIMs) to their National Identity Numbers (NINs).
The initiative, which began in 2020 as part of the Federal Government’s efforts to enhance digital security, has seen substantial progress, with over 153 million SIMs now successfully linked—a 96 percent compliance rate, up from 69.7 percent in January 2024.As the final phase approaches, the NCC urges all Nigerians to ensure full compliance before the September 14, 2024 deadline.
The linkage is crucial for bolstering the security of the digital economy, enhancing trust in digital transactions, and reducing the risk of fraud and cybercrime. By ensuring that all mobile users are verified, the policy supports increased participation in e-commerce, digital banking, and mobile money services, driving financial inclusion and economic growth.
Working alongside the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), the NCC has identified cases where individuals hold an unusually high number of SIM cards—some exceeding 100,000. The Commission continues to collaborate with security agencies to combat the sale of pre-registered SIMs, reinforcing national security and protecting the integrity of mobile numbers.
Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) have been directed to complete the mandatory verification and linkage of SIMs to NINs by the September 14 deadline. From September 15, 2024, no SIM card in Nigeria will be allowed to operate without a valid NIN.The NCC advises those who have yet to complete their NIN-SIM linkage, or who have experienced issues with verification, to visit their service providers or use the approved self-service portals.
The Commission also reminds the public that selling or buying pre-registered SIMs is a criminal offence, urging citizens to report such activities through its toll-free line (622) or social media channels. The NCC appreciates the continued cooperation of the public as it works to strengthen Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.
