Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has signed the Oyo State Electricity Regulatory Commission Bill 2024 into law. The signing ceremony took place at the Conference Room of the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan.
This move aims to provide the state with the opportunity to develop its own roadmap to sustainable electricity.
Governor Makinde emphasized that with the decentralization of electricity generation, transmission, and distribution, it has become evident that Nigerians can access dividends of democracy if federalism is practiced as it should be. He advocates for more powers to be devolved to the states.
In his statement, Governor Makinde said, “As promised earlier in the week, we are signing the Oyo State Electricity Regulatory Commission Bill 2024 into law today.”
He highlighted that this law will enable Oyo State to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity within the state.
The governor linked this initiative to the concept of fiscal federalism, emphasizing that amendments like these are essential.
He envisions a future where people can hold state governments accountable for electricity supply as the state works towards energy sufficiency.
Presenting the Bill earlier was the Deputy Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Honourable Mohammed Fadeyi. He noted that this marks the first time the state has embarked on an independent electricity project.
Various key officials and stakeholders attended the signing ceremony, including the Deputy Governor, Secretary to the State Government, Chief of Staff to the Governor, Head of Service, members of the House of Assembly, and commissioners.
