The Police disclosed on Thursday that they arrested Onyeabuchi Okafor and Jasmine Okekeagwu, son and adopted daughter of John Okafor, widely known as Mr Ibu.
The arrests were made in connection with the alleged theft of N55 million in donations meant for the actor’s health.
Mr Ibu had sought help on social media last year due to his poor health, prompting well-wishers, including the Bukola Saraki Foundation, to contribute funds for his medical expenses.
The Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department in Alagbon, Ikoyi, Lagos State, confirmed the arrests following a petition from Diamond Waves Law on behalf of Mr. Ibu’s wife, Stella Okafor.
The petition accused the two sons and the adopted daughter of conspiring to defraud Mr Ibu. The FCID Public Relations Officer, Mayegun Amina, stated that the culprits tampered with Mr. Ibu’s phone to access the funds.
Despite the tampering, the Police claim to have recovered the N55 million reportedly stolen by the children.
Amina mentioned that the suspects re-installed mobile banking applications on Onyeabuchi Daniel Okafor’s phone, taking control of Mr. Ibu’s banking activities and wiping off the original applications. The Police have charged the accused duo to court.
This development highlights the unfortunate incident involving Mr Ibu’s family, where funds intended for the actor’s health became subject to fraudulent activities.
The Police investigation and subsequent arrests shed light on the alleged conspiracy and financial wrongdoing within the family.
