Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun launched the ‘Special Intervention Squad’ in Abuja to combat kidnappings in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The squad, comprising specially trained mobile police officers, aims to provide rapid response to security breaches. Egbetokun emphasized community policing and pledged to extend the squad to neighboring states.

The move follows public outrage over the recent kidnapping and tragic killing of a sister in the Bwari Area Council. On January 3, 2024, six siblings and their father were abducted, and one sister, Nabeehah, was killed when the ransom deadline of N60 million couldn’t be met.

On Monday, the IGP called for intensified efforts to “decimate kidnappers and other criminally-minded individuals” in the nation’s capital. He also met with the Force Management Team and Tactical Squads in Abuja.

President Bola Tinubu condemned the rising incidents on Tuesday, describing them as disturbing, ungodly, and sinister. While security agencies act swiftly, Tinubu assured the rollout of resources, policies, and plans for massive education of Nigerian youths to address the challenges.
