FCCPC Imposes $110 Million Fine on British American Tobacco for Alleged Violations

The Federal Government, through the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), imposes a $110 million fine on British American Tobacco and its affiliates.

Alleged infringements of various acts led to the penalty, with BAT required to comply, undergo monitoring, advocate for public health and tobacco control, and provide assurances.

The FCCPC withdrew criminal charges in exchange. The resolution stems from an active investigation initiated in 2020. The commission executed a search warrant in 2021, gathering substantial evidence of infringements.

The penalty reflects the FCCPC’s commitment to fair market practices and consumer protection.

The fine follows the FCCPC’s emphasis on holding businesses accountable, generating N56 billion, primarily from penalties, in 2023. The External Affairs Director of BAT is yet to respond to inquiries.
