President Bola Tinubu congratulates Victor Osimhen, Asisat Oshoala, and Chiamaka Nnadozie for their recognition at the 2023 CAF awards in Marrakesh.
Osimhen, named African Footballer of the Year in the male category, and Oshoala, securing the female version, were honored at the Monday event. Nnadozie was crowned the female African Goalkeeper of the Year, contributing to the Super Falcons winning the Women’s National Team of the Year.
In a statement by his spokesman Ajuri Ngelale, Tinubu expresses pride, describing their achievements as “inspirational.” He commends the trio for their outstanding performances on both national and international stages, noting their role as sources of pride and inspiration for aspiring footballers across the continent.
Osimhen’s groundbreaking win marks him as the first Nigerian since Nwankwo Kanu in 1999 to claim the coveted title.
He triumphed over competition from Mohamed Salah of Liverpool and Egypt and Achraf Hakimi of Paris Saint-Germain and Morocco.
Oshoala, playing for FC Barcelona, secures a record-breaking sixth African Player of the Year award, overcoming strong competition from Thembi Kgatlana of South Africa and Barbra Banda of Zambia.
