The Federal Government has initiated an investigation into the unexpected cancellation of visas for 264 Nigerian passengers upon their arrival in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
The passengers, who were airlifted from Lagos and Kano on a flight that originated from the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, via the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano, experienced the visa cancellation at the King Abdul-Aziz International Airport in Jeddah.
Despite adhering to proper procedures, including undergoing the Advanced Passengers Information System during check-in formalities in Nigeria—an aspect monitored by Saudi authorities—the abrupt cancellation of visas has raised concerns.
In response to this, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is actively investigating the matter to ascertain whether any consular or aviation rules were violated during the process.
The government, through a statement by the media aide to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, AlKasim Abdulkadir, affirms its commitment to addressing such issues promptly, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s strategy aimed at ensuring the welfare of Nigerian citizens.
This investigation unfolds in the context of Nigeria’s recent participation in the Saudi-Africa Summit, where bilateral discussions and commitments across various economic sectors were established.
The government’s proactive stance in investigating and addressing this issue reflects its dedication to safeguarding the interests and well-being of Nigerian citizens traveling abroad.
As the inquiry progresses, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs aims to identify the root causes of the visa cancellation, with the overarching goal of mitigating such incidents in the future.
This incident highlights the importance of diplomatic engagements and adherence to established procedures in international travel for the benefit of Nigerian citizens.
