The occasion was marked by the unveiling of the university’s 75th-anniversary billboard, a symbolic step towards rekindling its historical prominence.

Expressing a commitment to this vision, Makinde assured the university’s management of the government’s support in the journey to reclaiming its position as the continent’s intellectual hub.

He fondly reminisced about a time when the University of Ibadan transcended national boundaries, serving as a beacon of intellectual prowess with ideas incubated at the institution resonating far and wide.

Highlighting the university’s erstwhile status as the intellectual capital of Africa, Makinde emphasized that its influence extended beyond Nigeria.

Leaders from Southern and Eastern Africa had significant interactions with the University of Ibadan in the past, solidifying its reputation as a global intellectual force.

Addressing potential challenges, especially related to ongoing construction, the governor sought the cooperation of the university community.

He acknowledged that the construction might cause temporary disruptions to traffic in the area but emphasized the greater goal of revitalizing the university’s standing on the African intellectual stage.

In response to Makinde’s call, Prof. Peter Olapegba, chairman of the anniversary committee, expressed appreciation for the governor’s positive and significant disposition towards the university.

He commended Makinde for being a true partner-in-progress, recognizing the vital role that collaboration between the government and the university plays in achieving their shared vision for academic excellence and intellectual leadership.
