Organised Labour, including the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress, has issued a five-day ultimatum over the arrest of NLC National President Joe Ajaero in Imo State.

The unions are demanding the redeployment of the state’s commissioner of police and the arrest and prosecution of the alleged attacker.

If these demands are not met within five days from Friday, they threaten to embark on a nationwide industrial action.

Ajaero’s arrest occurred ahead of a state-wide protest in Imo on Wednesday, with the police claiming it was for protective custody to prevent a potential mob attack.

However, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma accused the labour leader of meddling in the state’s political affairs.

The attack on Ajaero has drawn condemnation from various quarters, including political figures like Peter Obi and human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN).

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria has also condemned the attack. In a statement, they direct members to prepare for industrial action over this unpardonable incident.

The statement acknowledges Ajaero’s efforts in promoting fair labour practices and advocating for workers’ rights.

Furthermore, the National Union of Food Beverage and Tobacco Employees, in a statement by its President, Garba Ibrahim, and Secretary, Mike Olarenwaju, condemns the attack as totally condemnable.

Meanwhile, the Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre warns of potential violence in the November 11 governorship poll in Imo if the Federal Government does not intervene to restore normalcy.

The Centre notes a pattern of violence and repressive attacks on political opposition and critics in Imo State under Governor Uzodimma.
