In a recent statement, President Bola Tinubu expressed renewed focus on Nigeria’s economic prosperity following the Supreme Court’s affirmation of his electoral victory. Hosting German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Tinubu emphasized the readiness of Nigeria, the largest economy in Africa, to partner with Germany. While acknowledging Germany’s advancements in clean energy, he pledged to change Nigeria’s narrative, especially in the transition to sustainable energy.

Tinubu highlighted the ongoing fight against terrorism in Nigeria, seeking Germany’s assistance in stabilizing internal security and protecting democracy. He urged support for democracy and noted the diplomatic efforts of ECOWAS in managing the coup in Niger Republic. Emphasizing the need for collaboration in security, Tinubu expressed gratitude for past contributions by the German government.

During a government-to-business roundtable, Tinubu discussed efforts to reform business laws, minimize friction, and attract foreign investors. He assured efficiency and ease of doing business, citing the removal of oil subsidy and ongoing tax reforms. German Chancellor Scholz reiterated his country’s commitment to Nigeria’s security, democracy, and the rule of law. He emphasized the importance of Nigeria’s extractive industry benefiting the home nation.

Scholz’s visit marked the first since assuming office in December 2021, focusing on diplomatic relations and economic cooperation. The meeting continued a tradition of high-level visits between Nigeria and Germany, strengthening ties that date back over six decades. This engagement holds significance amid Europe’s heightened interest in Africa’s energy market due to the Russo-Ukrainian conflict. Scholz’s two-day working visit includes meetings with business leaders in Lagos, aligning with evolving geopolitical dynamics.
