The Police Service Commission (PSC) has provided clarification regarding the recruitment of ‘repentant thugs’ as Police Constables in Kano State.
PSC’s spokesman, Ikechukwu Ani, emphasized that these individuals are designated as Special Constabulary and are not officially recognized as police officers by the Commission.
Ani stated that the Constabulary operations align with the Police Act and are deemed essential in the current nationwide effort to combat criminal activities.
He highlighted that these recruits, who were previously involved in political thuggery, have voluntarily chosen to assist in establishing a crime-free state.
The PSC assured that the Kano Special Constabulary has undergone proper training and operates under strict supervision from the State Police Command, focusing on their localities to address security challenges.
Dr. Solomon Arase, the PSC Chairman and retired Inspector General of Police, emphasized the need for a citizen-based approach to security, emphasizing the collective responsibility of all Nigerians in ensuring the safety of lives and property.
