In a move to address persistent traffic issues, the Lagos State Government has issued a seven-day ‘Vacation Order’ to motorists and commercial bus drivers operating on the bridges across the state.

Sola Giwa, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, highlighted the necessity of this order to eliminate ongoing traffic infractions affecting bridge integrity.

Despite prior warnings, commercial bus drivers, commonly referred to as ‘danfo drivers,’ have continued to defy government directives, causing significant obstructions around these bridges. This defiance prompted the issuance of the ‘Vacation Order’ as a measure to ensure the free flow of traffic.

Giwa stated that the government has previously constructed designated bus terminals and garages for commercial activities in the state, emphasizing the need for compliance with these alternatives. Specifically, areas mentioned in the order include ‘Apongbon’ and ‘Idumota’ (Cater) Bridges, ‘Elegbata,’ ‘Ebute-Ero,’ and ‘Ejalonibu.’

He announced that immediate action would follow the expiration of the seven-day ultimatum, with the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) initiating strict enforcement operations. Giwa clarified that the activities of these commercial bus drivers on bridges contravene the provisions of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law 2018, as amended.

Giwa further warned that after the ultimatum, violators would face charges at the Lagos State Mobile Court, signaling the government’s commitment to achieving zero tolerance for such disruptions across the state. The objective is to ensure the smooth operation of traffic and uphold the provisions of existing transportation laws.

This initiative aligns with the broader efforts of the Lagos State Government to enhance traffic management and maintain the structural integrity of critical infrastructure within the state.
