Prof Adeolu Akande’s senatorial ambition for Oyo North Senatorial District has received a major boost asTwenty six (26) former Local Government Chairmen in Oke Ogun area of Oyo State endorsed him as the preferred Senatorial candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2027 elections.
The Chairmen comprised Chairmen of local Councils in the District, who served under the government’s of Alhaji Lam Adesina( 1999- 2003), and Senator Ishak Abiola Ajimobi (2011- 2019).In the same vein, the Chairmen also expressed their commitment to deliver bloc votes to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
The chairmen in a statement signed by the group’s Chairman, Hon Yekeen Popoola and his deputy, Hon Samuel Modepoola Egunjobi, stated that their support for the senatorial aspiration of Professor Akande was based on his exemplary records in academics, law profession, and public service.
They noted that Professor Akande distinguished himself in all the public offices he had held and demonstrated love for the senatorial district with his attraction of government projects to Oke Ogun and Ogbomosho areas of the state in particular and Oyo State in general.Professor Akande, who served as the Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), is a Professor of Comparative Politics. He is also a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. He had also served as Chairman of the Board of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).
He was Chief of Staff to Governor Ishak Abiola Ajimobi and had also served as Special Assistant in the Presidency of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo. As a journalist, he served as Regional Editor (South West) of The Punch Newspapers; Political Editor of The Nigerian Tribune; and Acting Editor of the Sunday Tribune.
The Chairmen noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has changed the narrative of governance in Nigeria with the removal of oil subsidy and deregulation of the foreign exchange market. They stated that the changes are already yielding positive results as they have freed resources for government at all levels to deliver needed infrastructure for development across the country.
They noted further that the Oke Ogun area has always identified with the progressives party since the First Republic, pledging to work at the grassroots to deliver massive bloc votes to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and all candidates of the APC in the 10 Local Governments in the Oke Ogun area.
They also pledged to work with the party members in Ogbomosho to ensure that the APC records a resounding success in the 2027 election in the senatorial district. “After 12 unbroken years of the Senate seat residing in Ogbomosho axis of the Senatorial District, we are left with no doubt that it is time for the Oke Ogun area to produce the next Senator’, they concluded.
Oke Ogun makes up 10 of the 13 local government areas of the senatorial district while the Ogbomosho axis makes up the remaining three local government councils.The signatories to the communique are:
