The Pro-Chancellor/ Chairman of the Governing Council of the University of Ibadan, His Excellency, Chief Adebisi Akande, CFR, former Chairman of the All Progressive Congress and former Governor of Osun State has directed the Premier University’s authority to convert all payments of allowances due to him in his capacity as the chairman of the governing council of the institution to scholarship awards for deserving science undergraduates of the university.

This was disclosed at the inaugural meeting of the council which held recently and was attended by all statutory members that “the Chairman of the Governing Council, Chief Adebisi Akande, CFR had earlier written a letter to the Registrar to direct that all payments which may be due to him as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council be applied for the benefit of some deserving Undergraduate students of the University who are offering Science courses in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology only”.

Chief Akande was quoted to have said that “he considers his appointment as the Pro-Chancellor/Chairman of Council of the University of Ibadan as a national call to service from which he does not intend to earn any remuneration”. And as such, his allowances should be kept as a form of Endowment for the award of scholarships or any other form of awards to cover the cost of accommodation and other financially approved levies charged for the deserving students.

Chief Akande added that the Adebisi Akande Foundation would augument any shortfall arising from any commitments from the awards to prevent any of the beneficiaries of the Endowment becoming stranded. Other pertinent issues which received attention from the council included, new schedule of levies for fresh and returning undergraduate students, advice to students to clear outstanding fees to facilitate their registration on or before September 04, 2024, for them to be eligible for First Semester Examinations.

While seeking for the understanding of the students body over the economic conditions that brought about the review of levies, the Council urged the students to take advantage of the students loan funds (NELFUND), as well as other sundry scholarships instituted by the university and other philanthropists to cater for indigent students.
