Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Whatsapp

A meeting between the Federal Government and organized Labour to avert the planned strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress ended without resolution.Despite efforts by Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, to persuade unions, strike remains set for February 23.

Meanwhile, the Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria threatens to strike by February 27 if agreements from 2020 are not honored. The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, urges union understanding, hoping for strike avoidance.

The NLC and TUC issued a nationwide strike notice over unmet agreements since the removal of fuel subsidy in 2023. The unions express disappointment in government’s failure to implement key agreements, signaling potential unrest.

The NLC Vice President, Hakeem Ambali, insists strike will proceed unless government addresses economic hardships caused by subsidy removal. Talks with the labour minister reveal unresolved issues, including wage payments and minimum wage negotiations.

Despite government calls for dialogue, labor leaders stress the need for effective implementation of agreements to avoid further discontent.
