The Lagos State Government has given a five-day ultimatum to squatters beneath the Ijora Causeway Bridge and the Lagos Blue Rail Line overpass.
Failure to vacate their shanties within this period may result in demolition due to potential hazards to the Lagos Blue Line corridor. The announcement was made by Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, during an inspection.
A 24-hour notice has also been issued to individuals selling petroleum products beneath the Ijora Bridge. They are warned to relocate their trucks and containers promptly or face confiscation.
The government emphasizes the dangers posed by these activities to both infrastructure and human safety in the area.
Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab led a high-powered team, including ACP BAYO Sulaima, Chairman of the Special Intervention Squad on the Restoration of the Lagos Badagry Rail Corridor Clean-Up, and Kunle Rotimi-Akodu, Special Adviser on the Environment, during the inspection of the Ijora Causeway Bridge and the under bridge.
Enforcement actions related to the sales and distribution of styrofoam items are deferred until the conclusion of the three-week prohibition period. This move underscores the government’s commitment to addressing potential threats while allowing for compliance within specific timelines.
