The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has launched an investigation into claims of foreign prisoners working for firms in Nigeria.

The assertion came during the ministry’s budget defense at the National Assembly by Senate Committee Chairman Adams Oshiomhole last week.

Oshiomhole raised concerns about foreigners potentially taking jobs intended for Nigerians and specifically mentioned the alleged involvement of foreign prisoners as construction workers in Nigeria.

He urged the Ministry of Interior to enhance the regulation of expatriate quotas, pointing out the need to address abuses and ensure that jobs are not given to non-Nigerians at the expense of locals.

In response to inquiries, the Special Adviser to the Minister of Interior on Media and Publicity, Babatunde Alao, confirmed the ongoing investigation.

He also highlighted the ministry’s efforts to review its visa policies concerning work permits and residence permits.

This comprehensive review aims to prevent and rectify abuses by foreigners in the country, reinforcing the commitment to addressing these issues.

Alao stated, “The matter is being investigated. Beyond investigation, the ministry is working on reviewing its entire visa policy vis-a-vis work permits, residence permits, etc. This will be out soon. This will, naturally, stop all these abuses.”
