**Director of Finance Killed in Ogun: Police Launch Investigation**
The Commissioner of Police for Ogun State, Abiodun Alamutu, confirmed on Wednesday night the tragic killing of Mr. Taiwo Oyekanmi, the Director of Finance and Accounts linked to Governor Dapo Abiodun’s office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
According to Alamutu, Oyekanmi was gunned down while returning from the bank, where he had withdrawn funds for the state using a bullion van.
The incident occurred on the NNPC Bridge near Kuto, Abeokuta. Oyekanmi was swiftly taken to the state hospital, Ijaye, where he was pronounced dead.
Alamutu explained that Oyekanmi, accompanied by a driver and another person, had visited Fidelity Bank to make a withdrawal.
They utilized a homemade bullion van and were supposed to have a police escort, but due to unforeseen circumstances, the policeman was absent at the time.
The assailants ambushed the team on the NNPC Bridge, blocking their path. Five individuals emerged from the vehicle, shooting Oyekanmi and using a sledgehammer to force open the receptacle containing the withdrawn funds. Subsequently, they fled with the money.
The police escort, absent during the attack, was not able to provide immediate assistance.
The driver claimed to have trailed the assailants to Conference Hotel, where he lost sight of them.
Alamutu expressed the urgency of the investigation, requesting CCTV footage from the bank to aid in identifying the culprits. He mobilized security forces to block exits from the state.
Governor Abiodun, in response, termed the incident a rude shock and called for prayers for Oyekanmi’s family.
He vowed to ensure the swift apprehension of the criminals and assured residents that such a tragedy would not recur in the state.
The governor lauded Oyekanmi’s dedication and service, describing him as a diligent official who will be sorely missed.
The government pledged to pursue justice for the deceased and his family.
The tragic incident underscores the need for enhanced security measures, and the investigation is ongoing to bring the perpetrators to justice.
