Lagos Commissioner Calls for Digitalization of Waste Operations for Transparency

The Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, advocates for the digitization of operations among PSP waste operators to elevate waste management standards.

In a meeting with the executive of the Association of Waste Managers of Nigeria, Wahab, accompanied by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, emphasizes the potential for increased transparency through digitization, as stated in a Sunday release.

Wahab encourages the association to implement robust data collation and enumeration practices for all commercial and private facilities under their service.

Specifically, he envisions the creation of an online portal equipped with GPS receivers in waste trucks to ensure accurate tracking of locations and trips completed by each operator on a daily basis, promoting efficiency and accountability.

Highlighting the importance of transparency, Wahab questions the significant drop of 50% in revenue generated by PSP operators within a five-year period.

He challenges the operators to provide clear explanations and rejects appeals to reduce the 25% remittance to LAWMA unless certain conditions are met.

The commissioner emphasizes the necessity for adaptation within PSP’s daily operations due to the continuous population growth and the subsequent increase in waste generation.

He notes that the current cost structure is unsustainable in the face of economic expansion, prompting the call for a significant shift in waste management strategies.
