Chaos unfolded within the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex on Monday as lawmakers gathered to initiate an impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Gunshots and the firing of tear gas filled the air as 23 lawmakers, presided over by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, resolved to proceed with the impeachment.
In a significant move, the legislators also suspended House leader Edison Ehie and several colleagues perceived to be loyal to the governor.
This development follows an explosive incident on Sunday night that led to the complete destruction of the assembly chamber by fire.
In the aftermath of the sitting, lawmakers were observed leaving the Assembly around 8:15 am, accompanied by heavy security escorts.
The chaotic scene escalated when gunshots and teargas were deployed, causing panic and prompting people, including nearby workers, to run for cover.
As the situation unfolded, police chased individuals, intensifying the atmosphere of confusion and concern within the vicinity.
The unfolding events add to the tense political climate, raising questions about the stability and governance in Rivers State.
