The Department of State Services (DSS) officially confirmed on Thursday that the former Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) boss, Abdulrasheed Bawa, has been released.
Bawa had been arrested on June 14, 2023, following a visit to President Bola Tinubu earlier on the same day.
The circumstances surrounding his detainment, for undisclosed reasons, had raised questions.
The DSS Director, Peter Afunanya, provided the confirmation of Bawa’s release through a statement posted on the agency’s official platform, X (formerly Twitter), on Wednesday night. In his statement, Afunanya stated, “DSS confirms release of former EFCC chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, a few hours ago, today, Oct. 25.”
The confirmation ends a period of uncertainty surrounding the nature and details of Bawa’s detainment, shedding light on the resolution of the situation.
The initial arrest had garnered attention and speculation, and the subsequent release now awaits further clarification on the reasons behind the arrest and the subsequent decision to set Bawa free.
