The United States Police have initiated a thorough investigation into the mass shootings in the state of Maine, leaving at least 22 dead and dozens injured.
The suspect, Robert Card, a certified firearms instructor and US Army Reserve member, was captured on CCTV footage entering a bowling alley in Lewiston with a semi-automatic weapon.
Lewiston city councillor Robert McCarthy confirmed the death toll and extensive injuries, prompting lockdowns and shelter orders.
Maine public safety official Mike Sauschuck described the situation as “very fluid,” with hundreds of police officers working to locate the armed and dangerous suspect.
Rescue vehicles rushed in from around central Maine to tend to the wounded, McCarthy said, and the two Lewiston hospitals “have called in every off-duty staff member that they could to deal with this.”
President Joe Biden made calls stepping away from a state dinner honoring Australia’s prime minister – to Maine’s governor, its two senators, and a local congressman to offer federal support, the White House said.
