IPAC Chairman Urges Judiciary’s Stronger Commitment to Democracy Amid Election Concerns

Yabagi Sani, the National Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council, has called upon the judicial system to demonstrate its commitment to the nation’s democratic processes, particularly in light of judgments from various election petitions tribunals across the country.

Speaking on Channels Television’s ‘Sunrise Daily’ program, he expressed concern that recent judicial decisions did not clearly indicate whether the judiciary prioritized the interest of democracy.

According to Sani, the judiciary needs to assert itself as a force that genuinely cares about the success of democracy in the nation.

He criticized the nature of recent judgments, decisions, and orders, suggesting that they do not align with the idea of a judiciary genuinely supporting democracy.

Sani emphasized that the judiciary must stand up and demonstrate its commitment to democratic principles, highlighting the critical role it plays in the democratic process.

Furthermore, the Inter-Party Advisory Council Chairman urged Nigerians to actively hold the judiciary accountable.

He stressed the importance of a 2022 Electoral Act free from interference, cautioning against anything that could potentially plunge the country into a confused state.

Sani emphasized the need for citizens to uphold the law in holding those responsible accountable, advocating for a democratic framework guided by transparent and fair processes.

Sani questioned certain aspects of the existing Electoral Act, emphasizing the importance of clear guidelines rather than leaving decisions entirely up to electoral bodies.

In encouraging citizens to stand up for accountability, he emphasized the need to adhere strictly to the law and expressed concern about recent judicial decisions, urging the judiciary to unequivocally support the principles of democracy.
