The Lagos State House of Assembly announced on Tuesday its renewed interest in the case of Bamise Ayanwola, the 22-year-old fashion designer who was tragically murdered after boarding a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in the state.

In response to a member’s urgent concern, Speaker Mudashiru Obasa emphasized the importance of deliberating on the matter.

He expressed the need to invite the family of the deceased, relevant government agencies, and the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights for an update on the case currently in court.

Obasa acknowledged the limitations in influencing judicial proceedings but highlighted the Assembly’s role in voicing public concerns.

He stressed the significance of building confidence in public transportation safety, proposing that all buses on the roads should be equipped with CCTV cameras. This recommendation extends to new trains and terminals to prevent crime and enhance security.

The Speaker referenced the successful pursuit of justice for Bolanle Raheem, a lawyer murdered by a policeman, within six months. He urged a similar commitment to ensuring justice for Bamise.

Bringing attention to the incident that occurred in February 2022, member Steve Ogundipe noted its prolonged unresolved status.

The Majority Leader, Noheem Adams, recalled the recent protest by the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) and Bamise’s family, where assurances were made to address their concerns.

The House, in its pursuit of justice and public safety, highlights the imperative for accountability in criminal cases and underscores the significance of timely resolutions to instill public confidence.
