The Senate has launched an investigation into the alleged killings and imprisonment of over 250 Nigerians in Ethiopia.
This move follows a motion titled “Urgent need to investigate the unlawful killings and incarceration of over 250 Nigerians in Ethiopia,” sponsored by Minority Leader Senator Simon Mwadkwon and Senator Victor Umeh.
During the presentation of the motion, Mwadkwon urged the Senate to direct the Committees on Diaspora and Foreign Affairs to collaborate with the Federal Government.
The objective is to immediately constitute a committee to visit Ethiopia and investigate the reported situation affecting Nigerians in that foreign land.
Mwadkwon further called on the Federal Government to direct the Ethiopian Embassy to collaborate with the delegation of the Senate Committees on Diaspora and Foreign Affairs. The aim is to find a lasting solution to the problems faced by Nigerians allegedly held in Ethiopia.
Expressing concern, Mwadkwon pointed out that a video clip circulating on social media indicates that Nigerians are held captives in Ethiopia’s maximum prison, facing serious peril. He emphasized the need for urgent intervention and a thorough probe into these disturbing reports.
Despite the global call for unity among nations, Mwadkwon lamented the maltreatment of Nigerians in Ethiopia, highlighting the lack of evidence of any crime committed by the citizens.
The motion responds to widespread information and a plea by Dr. Paul Ezike, urging the Nigerian Government to intervene in the reported inhumanity and torture faced by Nigerians in Ethiopia.
Over 250 Nigerians are said to be enduring this maltreatment without evidence of any crimes committed or court proceedings against them, making it a matter of concern for the Senate. The motion decries Ethiopia’s chosen path to mistreat Nigerian citizens without apparent justification in the 21st century.
