The Kwara Upper Area Court sitting in Ilorin granted bail in the sum of N5 million to Isese advocate Abdulazeez Adegbola, also known as Tani Olorun, who is being prosecuted for criminal defamation and public disturbance.
The presiding judge, Mr. Sunday Adeniyi, granted the bail with two sureties in like sum. He ruled that the two sureties must be reliable residents within the jurisdiction of the court.
The judge specified that the two sureties must provide evidence of having N5 million in their respective bank accounts. One of the two sureties must be a community leader in Ilorin, while the other must own land with a Certificate of Occupancy properly signed by the government. Furthermore, both sureties must have evidence of tax payments to the government for at least the last seven years.
Tani Olorun’s lead counsel, Ademola Bank, expressed concern about the stringent bail conditions but stated, “We will explore the opportunity offered by the law to meet the bail conditions.”
Tani Olorun and Oluwo Nla of Tede, Chief Ademola Olawoore, are standing trial on five counts of alleged criminal conspiracy, inciting public disturbance, disturbance of public peace, criminal defamation of character, and intentional insult before the Upper Area Court. These charges are contrary to sections 97, 210, 392, and 114 of the penal code of Nigeria.
While Oluwo Nla was admitted to bail last week Wednesday, the ruling on Tani Olorun’s case was deferred until Monday because the prosecution opposed his bail application. The case has been adjourned until October 23, 2023, for further hearing.
