Former President Olusegun Obasanjo asserted the constitutional authority of elected officials during an event on Friday when he directed traditional rulers to stand and greet him.
Obasanjo issued this directive during the commissioning of the 34.85 km Oyo-Iseyin Road and the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Iseyin Campus, which houses the College of Agricultural Sciences and Renewable Natural Resources.
Speaking in Yoruba, the former president emphasized the importance of traditional rulers showing respect to elders and those in positions of authority. He stated that such gestures contribute to preserving the Omoluabi culture of the Yorubas.
Obasanjo underscored that in Yoruba culture, age and position hold significance, with the governor’s role being higher than that of any monarch as long as the governor is in office.
He also emphasized the importance of promoting culture and value systems and recalled that even during his tenure as president, he paid respect to traditional rulers.
