Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), addressed the significance of the telecom sector’s growth in Nigeria during the Emerging Technology Forum. The event focused on understanding the Network Readiness Index (NRI) and its implications for the country’s telecommunications landscape.

In his speech, Prof. Danbatta highlighted the remarkable progress of Nigeria’s telecommunications industry, positioning it as a driver of economic growth. The expansion of digital access and networks has greatly impacted citizens’ lives. Despite these achievements, he acknowledged the pressing need for higher connectivity, reliability, and accessibility standards in the dynamic society.

Nigeria’s position as a telecommunications powerhouse was emphasized, boasting 82% of the continent’s telecom subscribers and 29% of its internet consumption. The country ranks eleventh globally in internet penetration and seventh in mobile phone usage. However, the NRI ranking for 2022, placing Nigeria at 109th out of 131 countries, served as both a humbling and challenging aspect.

The NRI is a pivotal metric that gauges the role and influence of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). It evaluates the performance of economies in four key categories: technology (infrastructure), governance, people, and impact. For Nigeria, prioritizing network readiness is not only a strategic necessity but a mandate for the transformative role of telecommunications.

Prof. Danbatta stressed the significance of engaging in discussions during the forum, examining the foundational pillars of NRI. The event featured presentations from renowned technology professionals, contributing insights and perspectives on this vital metric.

The Executive Vice Chairman referred to the Emerging Technology Forum as a beacon, guiding participants towards the intersection of transformation and advancement. The event aimed to bridge the gap between aspiration and achievement, fostering collaborative exchanges, spirited dialogues, and the exploration of emerging technologies.

In conclusion, Prof. Danbatta expressed gratitude to participants for their commitment and faith in the industry’s potential. He envisioned a future propelled by innovation, collaboration, and the promise of a digitally prosperous Nigeria.
