Hon Tunji Rafiu Adekunle, the Minority Leader of the 7th House of Assembly of Oyo State has advocated the introduction of what he called “VOLUNTARY TEACHING SERVICE SCHEME ” in Oyo State as part of ” palliatives package” aimed at managing the youths unemployment situation and calm the current labour unrest in the state.
This was disclosed at an interactive session with dejoymedia.online yesterday when his opinion was sought regarding the ongoing labour-government face -off . He explained that outside the usual demands of labour, one thing “Seyi Makinde’s government can do to touch the lives of more residents, is to put in place a structure of some 5 -member committee that would see to the implimentation of the suggested scheme which is bound to enhance the quality of Education in the state”, as the state is currently witnessing shortage of teachers at both primary and secondary levels of education.
This, he explained further, will enable government reduce unemployment, fill up vacancies resulting from retirements , upgrade standard of education, encourage enrollment in public schools, while boosting the image of the administration.
Asked about the financial implication of such a scheme, he said advantages derivable from it far outweighs the financial commitments which he put at: 132 million naira per month to be provided for from the allocations to the 33 LGS in the state.
He based his calculation on the assumption that each local government be mandated to recruit 1000 teachers-(600 & 400 for secondary and primary schools respectively). With this figure, and at 40,000 salary per month, means 4 million naira per LG, then multiplied by 33 LGAs amounts to 132 million which he said is not outside what the government can afford, moreso with the emerging increase of monthly allocations to states, he concluded.
