FUOYE decries attacks on varsity construction sites

The Vice-Chancellor, Federal University Oye-Ekiti, Prof. Abayomi Fasina, on Thursday raised the alarm over incessant attacks and trespassing by some violent indigenes of Oye Ekiti on the various construction sites of the university.

Fasina, who said the ugly development was already stalling infrastructural development and as well disrupting the peace of the Oye Ekiti campus of the university, appealed to security agents to urgently come to the aid of the staff and contractors working on the various construction sites.

The VC, in a statement titled, “FUOYE raises alarm over incessant trespass on sites by Oye indigenes”, however, said, “The university management will adopt a civil approach in tackling the ugly development to avoid deteriorating to chaos”.

This, he said, was to ensure that the students who were already resuming for academic activities on the campus after eight months of academic disruption as a result of the Academic Staff Union of Universities strike would have a hitch-free session.

Fasina said, “The people of Ikole-Ekiti (hosts of Ikole Ekiti Campus) have been very peace-loving, highly supportive and understanding to the university community. In fact, they recently offered to build us a 500-seater auditorium and have used their rich network to bring several developmental projects to support the university.

“The leadership in Oye-Ekiti has been supportive too, except for these people, who come to cause chaos from time to time. It is not the management of FUOYE that would pay them compensation for the use of the land which was taken over by the Federal Government for this university.

“It is the government that these affected people should approach for such and we appeal to them to give peace a chance, for that is the only way there would be developed in this town,” the VC said.
