FG calls for synergy among maritime agencies

The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Transportation, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, has called  for synergy among agencies of the Federal Government in the maritime sector in order to fight corruption.

According to her, there is a need for the Nigerian Ports Authority, Nigerian Shippers Council and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency to synergise with other relevant security agencies to fight corruption along the port access roads.

Ajani said this on Friday at the inauguration of the second phase of enlarged Presidential Port Standing Task Team in Apapa, Lagos.

Ajani, who was represented at the event by the Deputy Director, Federal Ministry of Transportation, Adams Ofie, said the ministry was aware of the major challenges of the of PSTT due to inadequate logistics and operational needs.

She said, “The task team is currently receiving attention in the ministry for possible intervention and facilitation on the logistics and operational needs to help a seamless implementation of the PSTT mandate. The purpose of flagging off the programme is for compliance and to solicit support from the agencies such as the NPA, NSC and NIMASA to synergize with relevant security agencies in order to ensure how best to enforce compliance”

Earlier, the Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer, NSC, Emmanuel Jime, had said the second phase, tagged, its ‘Operation Free the Port Corridors’ programmes, was meant to rid the nation’s port of inefficiencies and corrupt practices.
